Gold Label Hydro Coco RHP 60/40 Mix 45L

Gold Label Hydro Coco RHP 60/40 Mix 45L is a blend of clay pebbles (60%) and top-grade Dutch coco (40%), which combine to allow excellent drainage and aeration with the simplicity of use.

The improved drainage capability afforded by this product means you can water more frequently without over-watering. The absorbent qualities of coco and its excellent aeration properties make this a handy and popular potting medium.

Hydro Coco is ideal for use in hydroponic systems, and it has several features, and these include:

  • It has 60% clay pebbles (Hydrocorn) with 40% coco
  • Better H2O retention when compared to clay pebbles by themselves
  • Reduced feeding frequency needed compared to clay pebbles
  • Perfect for Flood and Drain (Ebb and Flow) and other pot-based systems

How does this substrate work?

Hydro Coco works well in Flood and Drain systems (also known as Ebb and Flow systems) when used as an alternative to just using clay pebbles. The additional coco can absorb more of your nutrient solution than the clay pebbles, significantly reducing irrigation time.

This substrate is also ideal for other pot-based hydroponic systems and even simple hand-watering methods when used right out of the bag. It has the recognised RHP stamp, so you can ensure that the coco has been washed and buffered correctly and that the EC is less than 0.6.

Because of the constitution of coco, it’s vital to use a coco-specific nutrient whenever you grow with it. Use a coco-specific nutrient if you’re not getting much run-off when watering.

When using hydro coco in a recirculating system, a hydroponic-specific nutrient often works better and provides a bit more pH stability.
Keep an eye on your plants and the levels in the nutrient solution to determine the best choice.

How do I use this product?

When you start potting your plants, it’s best not to compact the coco coir too much; instead, you should tap the pots and ensure that the coir levels out correctly. Actively consolidating it will reduce the amount of available O2, negatively affecting plant growth.

Between irrigation sessions, it’s a good idea to weigh each of your pots to ensure that the watering is happening satisfactorily, bearing in mind that over-watering is usually more harmful than under-watering.

Allow about 10 to 15% run-off each time you water, then water again when the pots’ weight has fallen to about half that of the last watering time.
To measure the EC of the coco, it’s a good idea to perform a 1:1.5 extraction instead of simply taking into account the amount of run-off, as this can sometimes yield misleading results. A Bluelab EC Truncheon may prove helpful for this task.
