Growth Technology EC Standard 1.413

Growth Technology EC Standard 1.413 is an additive used to properly calibrate the EC meter(s) used in the daily testing of your nutrient solution’s electrical conductivity. It works in hydroponic growing systems to ensure your EC meter returns accurate and reliable EC levels in your nutrient solution.

The product has an electrical conductivity (EC) of 1.413 ms/cm, thus making sure that the EC meter you use in your daily readings is correctly calibrated.

A correct reading is crucial in hydroponics because if your nutrient solution is too high or low in a particular metric when mixing different additives, boosters and supplements with your nutrient solution, it could impact your plants negatively.

Your plants may develop deficiencies, disease or even die because plants cannot uptake certain nutrients beyond the recommended range. You’re only going to get healthy plants if your readings are accurate. Therefore, such additives are central to how your hydroponic system should work.

  • EC Standard offers the hydroponic grower several attributes, including:
  • It calibrates your EC meter and ensures accurate readings
  • It makes sure that your proportions and blends will always be the recommended ones
  • Very easy to use and ensures the reliability of your EC meter
  • Excellent value for money

EC meters calibrate in milliSiemens, and the standard is considered 1.413mS/cm. Some meters calibrate in parts per million (PPM), which gets a bit more complicated. Those meters that output in PPM make this calculation based on the mS/cm level and convert this to PPM, but anomalies arise here because some manufacturers convert the mS/cm to PPM in different ways.

How Does it Work?

EC Standard provides a level playing field based on the conductivity of the water or the fluid you measure. Growers measure conductivity as the capability of water to pass electrical flow. The ability to do this is related to the concentration of ions within the water.

The ions come from dissolved salts and inorganic materials. Compounds that turn into ions in this way are known as electrolytes. The more ions in the water, the higher the water’s conductivity. Similarly, the fewer the presence of these ions, the lower the conductivity.

Distilled or deionised water may act as a good insulator because of its low conductivity, which approaches zero the purer it gets. On the other hand, seawater is very highly conductive. Ions can conduct electricity because of their positively and negatively charged states. Whenever electrolytes dissolve in water, they split off into positively charged particles, called cations, and negatively charged particles called anions.

The concentrations of these charges, both positive and negative, stay equal. So even though water conductivity increases when adding more ions, the water remains electrically neutral.

How to Use?

Pour EC Standard until the electrodes are just covered. After calibration, you should discard the product. Dispose of it completely, and don’t put it back in the bottle. Your meter should read 1.413, and then it is calibrated correctly. If not, then you need to recalibrate it. Check the meter’s instructions. It may be that the meter is old and needs replacing.
