Jiffy 7C Coco Coir Plugs

Jiffy 7C Coco Coir Plugs are both very efficient and cost-effective rooting plugs that need to be soaked before use to swell up. This handy starter medium is ideal for use in hydroponic growing systems.

Popular as a much-used and loved organic starter medium, they contain just the right amount of useable nutrients that your cuttings and seedlings need.

Soak them in O2 so they expand, and then they’re ready to take your cuttings or seeds.

These plugs offer several valuable features and attributes, and these include the following:

  • Known to be a very effective rooting-plug
  • Made from very lightly fertilised peat soil which is sterile and pH-adjusted
  • Very economical – safe to buy in bulk because of their extremely long shelf life due to their dried and compressed state before activation
  • Each plug is individually wrapped in thin fabric so it won’t fall apart.
  • Highly versatile and user-friendly
  • Sold in its dried and compressed form for easy storage and transportation
  • Soak in water and let them swell for about an hour before use

How do they work?

Coco Plugs are used worldwide and are an excellent alternative to the also popular Grodan Cuttings Seed Cubes. These plugs consist of 100% compressed peat. Water needs to be added to these so that they hydrate and swell up, ready to receive your seedlings or cuttings.

They are lightly fertilised, with sufficient nutrients to get your young plants off to a good start. They are pH adjusted and wrapped in fabric before being dried and compressed. They’re an excellent organic rooting medium that is easy to use. Because of their dried, compressed state, they can be stored for ages until they’re needed.

When you add water, they will swell to about three or four times their original volume; each contains a ready-made hole for inserting your seeds or cuttings. They are sterile to assist in keeping diseases and pests at bay, and their thin fabric wrapping ensures that the roots can easily penetrate while guaranteeing structural integrity over long periods.

How to Use?

Using these plugs is simplicity itself. After pre-soaking these plugs, place them at the bottom of a propagator. Select healthier shoots from which to take cuttings and make the cuts using a sterilised scalpel.

Then dip the end in a rooting gel such as Doff Natural Rooting powder and place the cutting end into a plug.

Repeat for all the cuttings, then place the lid on the propagator. Move this to a milder location beneath the propagation light. Always keep the rooting plugs quite moist and mist the cuttings two or three times every day. Gradually open up the ventilation slots on your propagator after a few days to reduce the humidity.

When the cuttings have become rooted through the rooting plugs, they’re ready to be transplanted into a larger cube, made from Rockwool or a similar suitable growing medium from where they can begin their ‘adult’ plant lives within your regular growing regime.

These plugs also germinate your seeds by dropping them into the pre-made hole (in one of the pre-soaked plugs) and then closing it up at the top by gently pinching it on the sides. When the tap root (the main root of the plant’s primary rooting system) appears, it’s time to transplant it to the growing medium you usually use.
