Active and Non-Active Cables: Precisely what is the difference?

Non-active cables only move data, while active cables additionally move power. Fan controllers like the EC1 haven’t got mains 3-pin plugs and are powered using the fan instead, so they need to have active cabling.

Non-active cabling only works with fan controllers powered by mains electricity. In contrast, active cables work in almost any circumstance, even when the fan speed controller is self-powered. The one exemption to that is the Digital EC Fan Controller and Balancer, which only works with non-active cables.

Please note that all fans and fan controllers have female connectors. For this reason, most controller cables terminate with male ends.
