Control Freak 5A Intelligent Controller

The Control Freak 5A Intelligent Controller is a very inexpensive but clever and easy way to adjust the speed of the intake or outlet duct fan in your hydroponic grow room with just a turn of the knob.

This controller is an excellent piece of kit for those starting out in hydroponics or if you have a small setup and gives you a great deal of control.

The Control Freak Controller has a few worthwhile attributes and features, and these include the following:

How this Controller Works

The 5A Controller is a great, compact device that allows you to control your duct fan speed. It plugs right into the mains, and your extraction fan then plugs directly into the socket on the front of the controller.

You can easily adjust your fan’s speed manually and thereby the extraction airflow rate.

You may want a higher extraction rate to lower both humidity and temperature within the growing area in the summer months. But in the winter, you won’t like the fan running at full pelt as it will get too cold.

So use this to control the fan speed accordingly so that the growing area remains at an optimal climate.

There’s an optional temperature sensor that plugs into another socket. This sensor sets a minimum constant fan speed while allowing you to set a maximum temperature which, when reached, will automatically trigger a change in fan speed until the temperature in the growing area has adjusted to the optimum again.

The unit can adjust the speed of any fans with a maximum power consumption of 1150 Watts (and a current draw of 5 amps).

How to Use

Plug the Controller into the mains socket and plug the extractor fan into the socket on the unit’s front panel. Turn the power on, and your fan will start to run. Use the control on the front of the controller’s panel to decrease or increase your fan’s speed.

Remember that the fan speed must always be high enough to get rid of large volumes of stale air from your growing space, even when it’s cold. If your fan’s speed is too slow, there might not be enough air exchange to replenish the carbon dioxide necessary for plant growth.

If your fan speed is too low, it might not keep humidity down sufficiently for healthy plant growth and diminish the chances of rot or mould setting in.

Please note: this controller won’t control the speed of circulation type fans which will, in general, have their own integral speed control. Attempting to use this fan speed controller to control the speed of a circulation fan will probably burn out the controller or even the fan itself.
